CHAPTER 18. BENEFITS OF BIO-ENZYME.

We learnt about bio-enzyme in 2019 from a young couple at Panaji.

Bioenzyme is a natural, organic cleaner, soil supplement, and fertilizer made from microorganisms like bacteria and yeast. 

To make a bio enzyme, we just need 3 items

1. Organic jaggery.

2. Citrus peels, any fruit peel, leaves, vegetable scraps or flowers. One, any mix of these or all of these can be used based on need and availability. If you want to use bio-enzyme in garden, leaves can be used. If you want to use bio-enzyme on the body, it is better to use fruits or flowers.

3. You can also add yeast or starter from previous batch to speed up the process. This process is optional.

Procedure

• In a plastic container, take 3 parts biomass (1500 grams leaves, citrus or fruit peels etc).

This time of the year is perfect to make a floral bio-enzyme. Today, we used flowers from Agati, Mexican Sunflower, Kanagile, Chakraphool, Dasavala, Moringa, Exxora, Champa, Kanakambar, Nagachampa, Nandi Jasmine and so on.

• Take 1 part jaggery (500 gram per 5 liter of water).

We use aged organic jaggery.

• Add 10 parts water (5 liters).

• Add a few teaspoons of starter or a pinch of yeast. If you don't have it, its OK.

We use half bowl of available Bio-enzyme as a starter.

• Leave about 2 inch of space at the top.

We use any old available plastic container with air tight cap.

• Close the lid to make it air-tight. Open once daily without fail and stir 2 rounds gently with a stick or wooden spoon.

• Bio-enzyme will be ready in 21 days if yeast or starter is added. If not, bio-enzyme will be ready in about 60 days.

We use bio-enzyme for many benefits like:

Cleaning

• Multipurpose cleaner: to clean floors, wash utensils, wash clothes, glass, countertops, and more 

• Deodorizer: Spray a solution of bio-enzyme and water to deodorize a space 

• Drain cleaner: Pour a solution of bio-enzyme into a drain to unclog it 

• Stain remover: Use bio-enzymes to remove stains from grease, protein, and starch 

Soil health 

• Fertilizer: Use bio-enzymes to improve soil structure and fertility

• Pest control: Use bio-enzymes to repel insects

• Herbicide: Use bio-enzymes to help plants grow well

• Soil stabilizer: Use bio-enzymes to stabilize soil

Environmental benefits 

• Safer for users and the environment: Bio-enzymes are biodegradable and pose fewer risks to human health

• Reduce harmful chemicals: Bio-enzymes reduce the release of harmful chemicals into the environment

• Improve indoor air quality: Bio-enzymes contribute to improved indoor air quality

Waste management 

• Convert organic waste into bio-enzymes: Use a natural fermentation process to convert organic waste into bio-enzymes. We use bio-enzyme to convert our feces and urine quickly into rich fertilizer for plants.

Bioenzyme, single handedly eliminates the need for many harmful chemical based products like dishwasher, laundry powder and soap, washing-machine detergent, phenyl floor cleaners, toilet cleaners, septic tank cleaners, shampoo, bathing soap, toothpowder, compost starter, floor-cleaners, deodorizers and so on. We consider it as a life-skill.
