Since 2018, we stopped buying refined flour (maida, rice flour & Sooji/Rava & Semolina), quit eating products containing refined flours & reduced the consumption drastically in unavoidable situations (festivals, travel, events etc).

Refined flours are unhealthy because the process of refining removes the bran and germ from the seed kernel, stripping away most of the fiber, vitamins, and minerals, leaving behind a carbohydrate-rich product that causes rapid blood sugar spikes, contribute to weight gain, and increase the risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes; essentially, it provides very little nutritional value compared to whole grains.

Refined flour contains just empty calories. No fiber, proteins or fats.
Refined flour contains just empty calories. No fiber, proteins or fats.

Key points about why refined flours are unhealthy:

Low in fiber: The bran, which contains most of the fiber, is removed during refining, leading to poor digestion and constipation.

High glycemic index: Refined carbohydrates, like white flour, are quickly digested and cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels, which lead to insulin resistance and diabetes.

Nutrient deficiency: The refining process also removes essential vitamins and minerals like B vitamins, vitamin E, and magnesium.

Potential for added chemicals: Sometimes, bleaching agents like potassium bromate are used in the refining process, which have harmful health effects.

Quitting refined flour, like maida, offer several health benefits:

Improved Blood Sugar Control: Refined flour has a high glycemic index, meaning it causes rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, followed by crashes. This contribute to insulin resistance and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. By replacing refined flour with whole grains, you will experience more stable blood sugar levels, reducing cravings and promoting better overall health.

Weight Management: Refined flour is low in fiber and contribute to weight gain. Whole grains, on the other hand, are high in fiber, which promotes satiety and helps feel fuller for longer, reducing overall calorie intake.

Enhanced Digestive Health: Refined flour lacks the fiber and nutrients present in whole grains, which are essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system. By cutting out refined flour, you're giving your gut a chance to heal and function more efficiently. You will immediately notice improvements in regularity, reduced bloating, and less discomfort after meals.

Increased Energy Levels: The blood sugar spikes and crashes caused by refined flour leave you feeling drained and sluggish. By switching to whole grains, which release energy more slowly and steadily, you'll experience sustained energy levels throughout the day.

Clearer Skin: Refined carbohydrates have been linked to inflammation in the body, which exacerbate skin conditions such as acne. Eliminating refined flour from your diet lead to a reduction in inflammation, resulting in clearer, healthier-looking skin.

Better Mood and Mental Clarity: By opting for whole grains, which provide a steady supply of nutrients to the brain, you will experience improved mood stability and enhanced mental clarity.

Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: A diet high in refined carbohydrates has been linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. By eliminating refined flour from your diet, you're taking a proactive step towards reducing your risk of these conditions.

Improved Heart Health: Whole grains contain heart-healthy nutrients like fiber, antioxidants, and minerals that lower cholesterol levels, improve blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease.
