Living on a farm

Updated: May 17, 2021

As soon as we started living on a farm, almost all of our friends and relatives interpreted that we have turned to farming. No. We are not farmers. We are not farming either.

During last three years, we traveled and lived at various places for weeks to months and analysed the quality of life there. We discovered that a farm is the best place to live a easy life. We have a simple home at our farm. We grow vegetables, fruits and other useful plants naturally. We just throw plenty of seeds and wait for the nature to do the rest. We don't add compost, don't till or plough, don't use pesticides or chemicals, don't use machines, and don't employ labourers. After nature grows the food for us, we just harvest.

One reason for living on a farm is to escape the unnecessary activities and things like the pollution, noise, stress, distractions, expenses and so on that is inevitable in urban places. Second, there are lots of direct benefits a life on farm offers like plenty of fresh air, sunlight, physical activity, peace, minimal expenses, and so on.

Staying close to nature, undisturbed, encounters with animals and birds, growing trees and food, and many other wonderful things can only be offered by a farm. These are an excellent means to learn the reality of life. We have realized that these are necessary for a healthy living. Health and reality for ourself and our children are the most important things we can offer as responsible parents.

While living in villages or cities, we had experienced almost similar life every day. Working, sleeping, eating by the clock. Maintaining similar atmosphere using coolers/fan/air-conditioners in summers and heaters in winters. I think this leads to monotony and boredom. On the contrary at the farm, we experience every day differently. Infact, within each day, there are differences in weather. We see the seeds germinate, crops and plants growing, flowering, fruiting, withering and growing again. This experience of bounty followed by dry spells, creates flexibility and hope in us. As these experiences happen repeatedly, instill a hope of good followed by every bad. We did not experience such a beautiful possibility living with people.

The only place better than a farm will be a Jungle. However, we as humans have lost our ability to live in a jungle due to farming and social living from thousands of years. And the next best thing is a farm. This is the best option we had.

When are you moving to your farm?
